So, while at my sisters house in Dallas a couple of weeks ago, I stumbled upon a TV show called “Who Do You Think You Are?”. The show basically follows celebrities around as they trace their ancestry through historically significant events. It really entertaining, but also interesting how each person has such a different story of family.
Now I am the type of person that thinks that when I see something on TV or in a movie, that I could easily do that. Like, I think I could be Jack Bauer when watching “24”, or would solve all the island mysteries on “Lost”. So naturally, watching people trace their exciting heritage got me thinking, “I bet I could do that, and find all sorts of crazy stories!” My sister agreed (she is worse than me about those sorts of things). So today I am going to get the ball rolling.
I need to start by interviewing my oldest relatives, whom I don’t see often or speak to much. I will need to find time to visit with my grandparents, and my grandmother’s sister, who has done a lot of research on a family tree. I be she will be the best source for that part of my mother’s line. Since I am not in school, and don’t have a “real” job this should all be very easy to coordinate. I just need the motivation, which watching the weekly episodes of “Who Do You Think You Are?” has begun to supply.
I hope I find some cool stories, but also I want to see what kind of people I come from and how that affects how I look at life today. We get so caught up in cultural influences and forget the genealogical ones. Yes, I am who I am because of the place I grew up, but also because of the personality I have from a long line of people ahead of me. I will be interested to see what I find in my quest.
I am sure I will post things on here as it happens.
Wish me luck!
